LOCAL AXD TEESOXAL. Sir. A. J. Dcla, cf Old Fort, spent Last Friday la Lesoir. Mrs. Lee Dale left Satardiy for Marion, to Tisit her parents, Mr. tad Mrs. J. E. Widbj. Mrs. Carroll Eabb and baby ent to Edgemont Last Wednesday to spend several days. Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Younger, of Asberllle, are visiting Mrs. Tonnger's sister Mrs. Delong Lit tle. Messrs. W. A. Self, T. M. Huff man and A. A. Whitner, of Hick ory, attended court in Lenoir last week. Mr. and Mrs. Delong Little gave a reception Saturday night, in honor of Miss King, who was visit ing them. Miss El ma King, of Asheville, visited Mr. and Mrs. Delong Lit tle last week, returning to her home Monday. Mr. Earnest Sherrill, of States ville, came up Friday to attend the "Tacky Party" at the skating rink Friday night. Miss Lula Gwyn, who has been visiting friends and relatives in Statesville and Charlotte, returned to her home Thursday. Special services by the Pastor at the Methodist church every even ing this week at 7:30. The public are especially invited to attend. Miss Mabel Coinann and Mr. G rover Triplett won the skates at the "Tacky Party" at the skating rink Friday night for being the tackiest ones on the floor. Sheriff Smith left last Saturday for Statesville with the following road hands for Iredell county: New Train. Thacker, of Greens boro, died at the hospital in Greensboro on the 2Uth of Febru arv. Mi's. 1 hacker will be re meinbered by Lenoir people as be ing with Mr. M. M. Courtney some 2 or 3 Years ago in the mil linery business. Mr. J. D. Crisp died at his home this place last Sunday after an ill ness of several months. Mr. Crisp was twice married and leaves a large family of grown children by his first wife and is survived by his secoud wife and three children. The body was buried at Fairfield burying ground yesterday after noon, Kev. It. P. Walker conduct ing the services. Sheriff Scott, of Pike county, Ky., came to Lenoir Friday with a warrant for the arrest of Noah lloberts, of said county, ltoberts ' was found at Collettsville and ar rested by Sheriff Smith, he made no resistance and said he was will ing to return without requisition papers. Sheriff Scott left with his prisoner for Kentucky Saturday Roberts is wanted for larceny and perhaps other things. Mr. T. J. Seabock, while chang ing his clothes Sunday morning from his trunk took up his pistol to move it and accidentally let it fall, the hammer striking the . trunk in such a way as to cause it to fire, the ball hitting him in the left leg above the knee and rang ing upwards. Dr. Kent probed for the ball, but failed to locate it. It may prove serious as it was a 41 caliber ball. Mrs. Celia Thompson, wife of Mr. Mathew Thompson, died February 20, 1908, at their home in Oklahoma in her 78 year. Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of George Smith, a sister to our Mr. M. D. Smith. Mrs. Thompson was married twice, her first hus was John McRary, he died and she then married Mathew Thomp son, who is a brother of Mr. Elca na Thompson, who is still living, though In feealo health. Mr. Evicrxnd Jones, Jr., nude a business trip to North Wilkesboro last week. Mr. II. M.' Teague went to Charlotte last week to have his eyes treated, . Miss Mary Meltoj, of The Val ley, is risitingher brother, Mr. J. H. Melton. The Kent-Coffey Mfg, Co., after being tlosed down for a week, re sumed work yesterday. - Mr. Henry Coffey, who spent a good part of the winter with his son at Forest City, X. C, was in town Saturday. As was expected the Jury ac quitted Sam Green and Oma Greer last week, charged with the mur der of Lawrence NeLson . Mrs. J. M. Downum and daugh ter, Miss Minnie, left Monday to visit mends and relatives in Statesvill and Mooresville. Mrs. iMitchell, who has been spending a few weeks in Lenoir with her sister, Mrs. Walker, left for her home in Statesville last Saturday. Mr. J. II. Miller, of BurkcCo., was in Leuoir last Friday ou busi ness. Mr. Miller is a brother of K. J., W. S. and A. V. Miller, of our town. Honor Roll. Since our last issue the following named persons have made pay ments to the News on subscriptions: It. G. Courtney, J. M. Livings- tQn, J. N. Scott, Green White, W. Z. Maltba. W. I. Hrothertou, J.P. Puett and W. A. Fuhvood. Beginning yesterday a new miied train, carrying mail and passengers, was put on the C. & N. W. Ky. between Lenoir and Hickory. The train leaves Le noir daily at 6.30 a. in. and re turning will leave Hickory about 11 p. m., after the arrival of 35 on the Southern. This will Ik? a great convenience as it will give us two daily mails and enable persons to get in and out of Lenoir more promptly. Death of Mrs. Tuttle. Mi-s. Mary Tuttle, whose illness has been noted in these columns, died at her home near Hartland last Sunday afternoon about 5 o'clock. Mrs. Tuttle was a woman of noble christian character, was a devout member of the Baptist church and was loved and esteemed bv a large circle of friends. She is survived by eight children, Revs D. 11: and R. G. Tuttle, Messrs. Jno. M. and George Tuttle and Mrs. G. M. Goforth, Mrs. J. L. Sigmon, Mrs. A. N. Corpening and Miss Lila J. Tuttle, all of whom were with her when she died. Mrs. Tuttle was 74 years old at the time of her death. The interment was at Littlejohn's church to-day at 11 o'clock Kev. R. P. Walker conducting the services. Mrs. Ballew Dead. Our community was much shock ed this morning at the announce ment of the death of Mrs. J. G. Ballew, which occurred at 2 o'cock last night. She had been in failing health for several years, suffering an attack of Grippe which was the immediate cause of her death. Her condition was not considered par ticularly serious until late Monday afternoon, when she began sinking and grew rapidly worse until her death. Her daughter-in-law, her husband and son Julius and Miss Fanny Jones a trained nurse were with her when the end came. No dettnate arrangements have been made for the funeral up to the time our forms close, as her daughter Miss Mattie May and son Gordon who are in Baltimore can not get here until to-day or to-night.
